“A late Victorian electroplate silver punch bowl, with a plain molded rim above a repousse swirl-fluted and shaped
band, above a plain inscription band crested and inscribed ‘From Stanley of Preston’ and ‘Dominion Hockey Challenge Cup.’”
Thus describes the inaugural trophy presented to the winners of ice hockey in Canada in 1888. Donated by Lord Preston of Stanley, Governor General of Canada, the cup was to be looked after by two trustees and presented each year as a challenge cup for the best hockey team in Canada. With the growth of the game and its ultimate expansion into the United States the trophy became the symbol of champions in the National Hockey League and is more commonly referred to as the Stanley Cup.
Originally commissioned in 1892 as the Dominion Hockey Challenge Cup, aka the Stanley Cup the trophy is named after Lord Stanley of Preston, then–Governor General of Canada, who donated it as an award to Canada’s top-ranking amateur ice hockey club.
